JCPenny might surprise you, but they have an extensive catalog service that sells lots of dinnerware. When inventory gets too high, they have to move them and you can get great deals.
Apart from those stores, which you might expect to find deals (heck Wal-mart was built to bring you cheap stuff) you can also find deals quite often at higher end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Pottery barn. The thing about that though, is "deal" is a relative term here. A Neiman Marcus deal may see a $300 dinnerware set on sale for $183. Yes, that's quite a big drop, but it's still $183 bucks which is not a price tag most people would think about when they conjure up thoughts of "discount dinnerware sets". Regardless, deals are out there no matter what price point you're willing to start at.
Hardware stores? Are you kidding me? Yes, many people don't think of hardware stores for dinnerware, especially not discount dinnerware sets, but hardware stores very often sell dinnerware. I have absolutely no idea why in the world a hardware store would carry a line of dinnerware, but many, if not most of them do! What does this mean? Well, since people don't often shop at hardware stores for dinnerware, the things stack up in the store room and eventually the owner has to move them out. That means sale, and sometimes MASSIVE sales. This can be a really great place to pick up deals and not many people really know about it or understand the buying opportunity here. That means there's not much competition out there waiting to swoop in and buy before you do.
Chances are, there are several smaller and larger chain hardware stores in your area for you to choose from. Especially the smaller stores, make them an offer even if they aren't on sale. Grab a manager or owner and offer half off....you'll be surprised more often than not! And if there aren't a lot of hardware stores in your area, try online. Most of these places have web sites and offer discount dinnerware sets right online.
